EAST CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE

HEALTHCARE EDUCATION Healthcare professions are comprised of a diverse selection of careers who provide care and health support for the public. Providing care requires a high level of morality, professionalism, and ethical values. All students enrolled in a healthcare program are required to submit fingerprints for criminal history background checks. Criminal History Background Checks All applicants will be provided with the ECCC Criminal History Background policy, rights, procedures, and forms. The Office of Healthcare Education will schedule applicants to submit consent forms prior to fingerprinting. Applicants who refuse consent or fail to submit proof of criminal background information will not be eligible for admission to a healthcare program. The applicant’s fingerprints are submitted to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and run through the Mississippi Criminal Information and Federal Bureau of Investigation databases for criminal history background checks. An applicant is disqualified for entry into a healthcare program if a person has ever been convicted of a felony, or pleaded guilty to, or pleaded no contest to a felony of possession or sale of drugs, murder, manslaughter, armed robbery, rape, sexual battery, sex offence listed in Section 45-33-23 (f), child abuse, grand larceny, burglary, gratification of lust or aggravated assault, felonious abuse and/or battery of a vulnerable adult. This list of disqualifiers is not all-inclusive and may include certain types of misdemeanors. A satisfactory background report is required for participation in clinical agencies. Any student with a disqualifying event/s is responsible for removal of all event/s. Program admission may be rescinded by the Dean of Healthcare based on review of events in a student’s criminal background check. Students who refuse to submit to a criminal background check or do not pass the criminal background check review will be dismissed from the program but may seek admission into another educational program at East Central Community College. ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program is founded on nursing theory and education to offer learning and professional opportunities in academic and practice environments for qualified students pursuing a career as a registered nurse. The program supports the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in competency-based learning environments to promote lifelong learning as a registered nurse in the nursing profession. The registered nurse performs assessments, diagnoses, planning, interventions and evaluations in promoting and maintaining health; restoration, management of individual responses to illness, injury, or infirmity; and achievement of dignified deaths (2010, Mississippi Nurse Practice Law). The registered nurse practices under the direction of a licensed physician, dentist, advanced practice nurse, or psychiatrist. Graduates of the program receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS). Graduates who meet the requirements of the State Board of Nursing may be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEXRN ®). The State Board of Nursing may deny any application for licensure due to criminal history, commission of fraud or deceit in the application process, or addiction to alcohol or other drugs. The Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (MS-IHL) and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
