Former Employee Earl Marshall Earl Marshall (’56), a native of Philadelphia who served as the college’s first director of workforce development after a long career as a salesman for Lincoln National Life, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021. He was awarded football scholarships to ECCC and the University of Southern Mis- sissippi and was very proud to be the first in his family to graduate from college. He is a member of the ECCC Athletic Hall of Fame and was instrumental in the cre- ation of the Warrior Club which raises funds for ECCC athletics teams. He was an Eagle Scout and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bob- bie Jones; sons, Mike, Mickey, and Bob; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Former Coach Jack Carlisle Jack Carlisle, who served as a volunteer assistant coach at ECCC, died Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at his home in New Albany. A graduate of Mississippi State University and Mississippi College, he spent more than 61 years as a teacher and football coach, accumulating a high school record of 262 wins, 70 losses, and 17 ties. He’s a member of seven Halls of Fame, including the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Mississippi Community College Hall of Fame and North Mississippi Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Former Employee Barbara Deaton Barbara Nell Finney Deaton died Friday, Aug. 16, 2021, as a result of pancreatic cancer. “Miss Barbara” as she was affectionally known began work as a secretary at East Central in 1975 and retired after nearly 28 years of service. Her husband, the late Al Deaton, was a longtime physics instructor. She was a member of Clarke-Venable Baptist Church where she faithfully played the organ and piano for over 40 years. After retirement, Al and Barbara enjoyed playing in a dulcimer group, which traveled to local nursing homes to brighten the days of the residents with folk and gospel standards. Former Employee Dorothy B. Carpenter

Dorothy B. “Dot” Carpenter died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at the age of 88 of natural causes. A Union native, she worked as a secretary at Union High School, East Cen- tral Junior College, and Murray High School. She met her husband, Ray, while they were both employed at Union High School, where he was a new coach. They later moved to Jackson, and in 1957 she began working at F.W. State Agency which later became USF&G and worked there until she retired in 1994. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie and Penny Carpenter of Clinton; her much loved granddaughter, Hannah Jones Belshee (Jeff) of Chicago; step-great granddaughter Violet; brother, Lonnie Boyd (Carolyn) of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews. Barbara Ann Mowdy died Sunday, March 7, 2021. She graduated from Neshoba County Schools and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from the University of South- ern Mississippi and her Master’s degree from Mississippi State University. She began her career in education in 1965 in Long Beach and spent the last 23 years of her career as a math instructor at Philadelphia High School where she retired in 1993. She was also adjunct faculty for East Central Community College from 1991 until her final retirement in 2004. She is survived by nieces, Gwen Ryals, Reba Fryery (Robert), Wanda Savell (Mel), and Susie Strickland (Larry); nephew Chris Mowdy (Renee); and sev- eral great and great-great nieces and nephews. Jimmy C. Dempsey, who served many years as the Career & Technical Education counselor at East Central Com- munity College, died Wednesday, May 19, in Birmingham, Ala. He was a native of Winston County and enjoyed a lifelong career in education, having served as a high school coach in Mississippi for many years before joining the ECCC staff. Many knew him as “Coach Demp.” He was a collector of many things, including pens, caps, menus, and match books.
