son had nine home runs, nine doubles, and two triples. Overall, the Lady Warriors finished the year 13-27 and just missed out on the postseason. Student-Athletes Honored for Academics ECCC had 73 student-athletes honored by the MACCC for their academic performances in the 2020- 21 school year and another 41 recognized by the NJCAA. To earn the MACCC honor, student-athletes must maintain a grade-point average of 3.25 for a mini- mum of 24 cumulative hours. Academic All-State was awarded to student-athletes who posted a GPA between 3.25 and 3.79, while Distinguished honor was awarded to those with 3.8 and higher. In addition to individual awards, the ECCC Women’s soccer team was named MACCC All-Academic Team of the Year for their sport with a conference-best 3.67 team GPA. Nationally, student-athletes are eligible to earn academic honors by achieving an overall GPA of 3.60 or higher for the 2020-21 academic year. East Central finished with 12 NJCAA All-Academic First Team selec- tions (4.00 GPA), 11 NJCAA All-Academic Second Team selections (3.80-3.99 GPA), and 18 NJCAA All-Academic Third Team selections (3.60-3.79 GPA). The Lady War- rior tennis team posted a 3.81 team average, the third- best in the country in their sport, while the women’s soccer program’s 3.67 GPA was fifth in the nation and the men’s tennis team’s 3.47 ranked 12th.

MELVIN WOOTEN HONORED AS ‘VOICE OF THE WARRIORS’ Melvin Wooten (second from right) of Boswell Media was honored at the ECCC baseball doubleheader against Coahoma April 25 for his 17 years as play-by-play announcer for East Central athletics. During those years, he called hundreds of games across multiple sports helping bring ECCC athletics into the homes and commutes of thousands of listeners. To commemorate his final regular- season games, he was presented a framed ECCC baseball jersey by (from left) Head Baseball Coach Neal Holliman, ECCC President Dr. Brent Gregory, and Director of Athletics Paul Nixon. Wooten was also honored at the ECCC vs. Jones football game on Sept. 16.
