2 students earn national honors

Two Leake County stu– dents were among East Central Community Col– lege workforce education students to receive awards at the 51st annual Skills– USA National Skill and Leadership Conference n Louisville, Ky. Blake Faulkner of Car– thage finished fifth in the nation in carpentry, and William Milner of Lena finished 16th in electrical construction wiring. Other ECCC honorees included Jay Riser of Forest , seventh in cabinet making; Asif Zaffar of Philadelphia, 11th in sheet metal; and Chad Simoneau of Louin, 12th in plumbing,

More than 6,000 stu– dents participated in 100 hands-on skill and leader– ship competitions during the two-day event. The East Central stu– dents advanced to the national competition after finishing in first place in their categories at the Mississippi SkillsUSA State Competition in J ackson this spring. SkillsUSA is a partner– ship of students, teachers and industry representa– tives working toward a skilled workforce. The SkillsUSA Cham– pionships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation.
