Welch joins ECCC football staff

Welch received his bachelor's degree in 2012 in health and human perform– ance from the University ofTennessee– Martin where he was a two-year starter at cornerback. Welch and the UT– Martin defense led the league in four categories including total defense passing defense, passing efficiendy defense and first and third-down defense; and were ranked fifth nation– ally m total defense. A 2008 graduate ofJones County Junior College, Welch was a two-year lettr rman for the Bobcats and was selected first team All-State as both a defensive back and wide receiver. He was also a first team All-State selection at Taylorsville High School where he graduated in 2007. '

DECATUR-Taylorsville native Derek Welch was recently named an assistant football coach at East Central Community College Prior to joining the ECCC staff, Welch served as an assistant defensive backs coach at Northwestern State Uni– versity in Natchitoches, La. He has also held similar positions at Kemper County High School in DeKalb and Southern Arkansas Vniversity in Magnolia, Ark. His experience also mcludes his s~rvice as a Summer Basketball Camp director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in Union City, Tenn.

East Central Commu– nity College's fast-pitch softball squad swept Marion Military in double-header action The Lady Diamond Warriors took an early lead in game one to cap– ture a 16-5 victory over the Lady Tigers and completed the sweep with an 8-0 shutout. In Game 1, Mahalia Gibson of Oak Grove High School went 4-for- 4, including two dou– bles, to lead the Lady Warrior offense. She also scored two runs and had three RBis. Other hitters were Caitlyn Aldous of Petal, Mallory Lee of Quitman and Maegen Ellis, a product of Oak Hill Academy in West Point, each with a double and single; Karoline Hol– sonback, a product of South Lamar High School in Kennedy, Ala., double; Mallory Thursday on the Decatur campus.

Mahalia Gibson went 4- tor-4 with two doubles for ECCC in Game 1. She also scored three runs and had three RBis. Turner of West Laud– erdale and Christen Benson of Brookhaven, two singles each; and Rachel Davis of Petal, single. In addition to Gibson, runs were scored by Turner (3). Aldous (2) , Lavender (2), Benson (2), Han– naford, Lee, Duke, Hol– sonback and Ellis. Lacey Hill was the winning pitcher. She went three innings and allowed one earned runs on three hi•s She also fanned two batters and walked one. Hill is a product of Kilbourne (La.) High School.
