ECCC to build women's dorm By Cheryl Owens cowons@themerldlanstar.com DECATUR~ Plans are in the works for construction of a new women's dormitory at East Central Community College. ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart said although a location for the dor– mitory has not yet been decided, it will probably be built across from Barbara Hall and will have between 120 to 150 rooms to rent out to female students. Stewart said ECCC is one of three colleges in the state with a 100 per– cent dormitory ot:cupancy rate. "In June of last year tor the fall semester we had 162 females and 113 males on the waiting list to get into a dorm room," Stewart told members of the Newton County Board of Supervisors Thursday. "We have par– ents calling wanting to get their kids in the dorms. We want to meet the needs of our students by building a new dorm." Stewart said while there is no defi– nite timcframe for con!!lruction of the dormitory, hopes are to begin work in the near future. Stewart told supervisors plans are to pay off the balance of two loans, including a $480,000 loan on Barbara Hall the latter ofwhich would save 'e"1on County taxpayers an addi-

"As one loan falls off the books we anticipate one coming on to build the new dorm, 11 Stewart said. 11 We have two sources of debt at the col– lege right now and we believe we can pay both of them off, including Barbara Hall, this year." Stewart said the col– lege would share some of the responsibility of repaying the loan for the new dormitory. "We are willing to pledge some of the rev- • enue that comes in from rental," Stewart said. "If we had a $360,000 annual payment right now, we would get roughly $228,000 from the county so if we put in about $140,000 for a 25 year loan at 3.75 percent we could borrow roughly $5.7 million dollars to build a dorm. 11 Newton County Board of Supervisors President
