DECATUR - The state champion and nationally– ranked East Central Com– munity College softball team was just a win away from capturing a second– straight Region 23 Tourna– ment title but the Lady Dia– mond Warriors fell twice to top-ranked LSU-Eunice in the championship finals Saturday, May 7 to claim runner-up honors. The three-day, double– elimination competition was held at Traceway Parle. in Clinton. East Central, ranked 19th prior to the Region 23 Tournament, sports a 34-13 record under head coach Scott Hill of Forest and assistant Kristin Chaney. The championship squad is making its second– straight appearance in the NJCAA Division II Nation– al Softball Championship held in Normal, Ill. This year's event is scheduled May 19-21. The Lady Diamond Warriors finished fourth in the 20 I0 tournament en route to a 47-11-1 record. Although disappointed \Vith Saturday's results, Coach Hill said he was "'very proud" of his team's ffort against the nation's op-rated softball progrcun. Dr. Muse, who was selected as East Central Community College's representative in the 15-member 2011 Oass, Is shown receiving the prestigious award from ECCC President Dr. Phil A. Sutphin (left). Dr. Muse, a Sebastopol native, was a standout member of the Warrior basketball teams during the 1947-48 and 1948-49 seasons. He served as team captain and was selected most valuable player his sophomore season.
