~ East Central's Diamond Warriors receive national raruang

The ~Ul;Cess of East Central Community College's 20 l 0 baseball team has caught the attention of the Nattonal Junior College Athletic A~;~ociation (NJCAA) '111e Diamond Warriors - who com– pete in Division II are ranked tenth in the most recent poll (March 17), accord– ing the NJCAAWeb site. Head coach Neal Holliman said he is "uppn:ciative and proud" of the atten– tion g~ven to his squad, which currently sports an 18-6 record following a double-

header split with visiting Hinds Community College Saturday, March 20. "We are very appreciative of the sup– port and recognition that we have received for our program," said Holliman. ''There are a Jot of individuals that have contributed to this team's suc– cess from within the program and out– side the program. Everyone has a role to play in this recognition, from current players, supporters and parents to former players, parents and supporters. This (national ranking) has been one of the

goals since we arrived (in 2006) and we are very proud for our team and institu– tion. Now we must stay focused and approach every day with the concentra– tion and effort that got us to this point." In addition to the team's success, sophomore first baseman Richie Long of Carthage was recognized as Division 11 Player of the Week for March 17. Long helped lead East Central to wins over K.ishwaukee College (Illinois), Tyler Junior College (Texas) and a dou– bleheader sweep ofHibbing Community

College (Minnesota)·by posting a .700 (7 1 of 1 0) batting averagewith one home run ~ and six RBls. He nlso scored five runs · and walked twice. Prior to receiving the nationnl recog– nition. Long had a .424 batting aYemge with seven double..~. three home runs and 21 RBis. He also had 11·.474 on-base per~ centage and 667 slugging percentage. The Diamond Warriors return to action Wednesday. March 24, for a dou– bleheader at Mississippi DeJta Community College in Moorhead.
