EC steps into NJCM spotlight

0 Warriors take tenth spot in Div. II rankings Wednesday, March 17, was a good one around Decatur. The East Central Commu– nity College Diamond War– riors were, after all , voted tenth nationally in the National Junior College Ath– letic Association's (NJCAA) most recent poll with a mark of 18-6. The success of East Cen– tral Community College's 2010 baseball team has caugh t t he a t t ention of the National Junior College Ath– letic Association (NJCAA). Head coach Neal Holliman said he is "appreciative and proud" of the attention given t o his squad, which entered this week with an 18-6 r ecord following a doubleheader split with visiting Hinds Communi– ty College Saturday. "We are very appreciative of the support and recognition that we have received for our program ," said Holliman. "There are a lot of individuals that have contributed to this team's success from within the program and outside the program. Everyone has a role to play in this r ecognition, from cur– r ent player s, supporters and pa r en ts to former players , parents and supporters," he continued. "This (n ational ranking) has been one of the goals since we arr ived (in 2006) and we are very proud for our team and institution. "Now we must stay focused and approach every day with the concentration and effort that got us to this point." >- See ECCC on SA

NJCAA Divsion II Player of the Week honoree Carthage High School alum Richie Long was named the NJCAA Div. II Player of the Week for March 17. The East Cen tral Community College soph omore had a batting average of .700 (7-of-10) for the week with one home run and six RBis. Be also scored five runs and walked twice. On the se ason, Long, who plays firs t base for the Warriors, had a bat– ting average of .424 with seven doubles, t hree homeruns and 21 RBis as well as an on-base per– centage of .474 and a slugging percent· age of .667.
