"Practices have gone very well," Cheatham said. "Our guys are in decent shape and are physically a better football team than last year. We also seem to be a lot stronger." This year's squad is also a little less experienced. Twenty-three lettermen are gone from ·2007 and only 14 letter-winners return. Several freshmen are listed as starters. "We'll probably have three freshmen that will start....all are very good players and a cou– ple of them were here for spring workouts," said Cheatham. One such freshman is Emman– ual Taylor, a product of Early County High School in Blakely, Ga., who is projected to be the starting quarterback. The 6', 170-pound signal caller was selected JAC (spell out) Player of the Year in addition to receiving All-State and All-Star honors. Taylor had touchdown runs of 65 and 46 yards and connected on 38- and 22- yard passes for scores in the spring game. Cheatham said Taylor "is doing really well. He's got a good arm, runs well and has good knowl– edge of the game." Taylor's expertise will be put to use in directing the Warriors' new "spread attack" offense. ''We're going to be a wide-open offense," Cheatham stated, "but that does not mean that we will throw the ball all the time. We will have a balanced attack and our passing game will feature a lot of short passes, such as screens and slant patterns. We want to get the ball out quick to our receivers and let them make something happen. The spread offense will also help set up our running game." Wide receivers, Kendrick May (5-10, 165) of'l'uscaloosa County (Ala.) High School and Donovan Tate (6-2, 195) of Hattiesburg, are listed among top offensive returnees. Courtney Shelton (5- 10, 220) of'l'uscaloosa is regard– ed as the top returning running back., but Cheatham said several freshmen are also battling for backfield positions, including Derrick Cade (5-7, 210) of Tuscaloosa CentrAl.
