Another 'Coach Pouncey' JoinsECCC Football Staff

A familiar name to follow– ers of East Central Community Col– lege athletics has joined the Warrior football coaching staff for the 2008 campaign. Derek Pouncey, nephew of former ECCC head football coach Ken Pouncey, has joined Steve Cheatham's staff and will serve as wide receiven; coach. "Derek is a huge asset to our football program," Cheatham said. "He's a great coach who not only has knowledge of the game but also has experience with computers and video equipment. We're JUSt very glad to have him as a member of our staff." The younger Pouncey said following his uncle as a member of the Warrior coaching staff "is complete and total excitement." "To be on the same field as my uncle coached for those many years is a great thrill for me," Derek tated "It's just pretty awesome be– ing here.'' Derek said he also looks for– ward to talking with his uncle and re– ceiving advice. "['ve been told I need get out to h1s house and do a sit-down with him over coffee," Derek said. ducted into the College'sAthletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Derek Pouncey's father is also a former coach. "Dad coached a long time at orthwest Jumor High School in Me– ridian and tn Alabama. He coached football, basketball, baseball. ...he did it all," said the new Warrior assistant. "We're just a family full ofcoaches " Prior to joining the FCCC staff, Derek Pouncey served from 2006-08 as assistant head coach, line coach and teacher at Kemper County High School. He was offensi"e !me coach and teacher at Meridian lhgh School in 2005-06 and helped lead the Wild– cats to the South State 5A Champion– ship. Pouncey served the previous year as defens1ve coordinator,'" ide re– ceivers coach and teacher for Phila– delphia Public Schools. He is also a former athletic director and head football coach at Northwest Junior High Sc.hool and was performmg arts instructor at Me– ridian High School from 2000-03.
