Newton County Relay for Life officials hit the ground running last week, setting a date for the 2006 event along with naming chairmen for several key posi– tions. Fund raising activities for the American Cancer Society spon– sored event will culminate on June 9 with Relay night to be held at track on the East Central Com– munity College Campus. Stevens said the event is sched– uled to begin with a survivors reception at 6 p.m. and opening ceremonies beginning at 7p.m. fol– lowed by the first lap and parade of teams led by the survivors in attendance. Numerous entertainment opportunities are planned around a festival atmosphere as teams make one fmal push to raise funds by selling food, offering games for kids and other activities. Positions remaining available are Relay event chairman and co– chairman, logistics chairman and donor development chairman. The next mc,eting for relay offi cials is set for March 6 at 5 p.m. at Regions Bank on Main Street in Newton. All individuals wishing to help or volunteer for Relay for Life are encouraged to attend.
