Former ECCC baseball players continue careers at 4-year schools

After helping lead East Central Community College to its first Region 23 baseball title and NJCAA Super Regional appear- from anee. several members of the 2005 school leges and universities. Outfielder Marcus Davis of Magee, who led Warrior sluggers with a .322 batting average, has signed withAlcorn State University. Davis, an all– state selection, also led the Diamond Warriors in home runs (12) and RBis (32).1n addition, he had a triple and three doubles. He was selected the Diamond Warriors· Most Valuable Player and received the Best Offensive Player award. Continuing his career at Mississippi Valley State University is outfielder Van Wilson of Collinsville, a product of West Lauderdale High School. Wilson batted .279 and had four homers. three triples, nine doubles and 21 RBls. First baseman Corey Coward of Noxapater has joinE>d the University of West Alabama squad. Joining the jacksonville State (Ala.) University baseball team is southpaw hurler Josh Miller of Elysian Fields, Texas. Miller went 11-3 on the mound and posted a 2.03 earned run aver– age. He fanned 90 batters. He was named to the All-Region 23 and all-state teams and was select– ed the Diamond Warriors' most outstanding pitch– er. ShortstopJoseph Cavenaugh ofDecatur is now a member of the Belhaven College baseball team. Cavenaugh batted .218 and had four doubles, a triple and 15 RBls. Right-handed pitcher Cody Savell of Newton is continuing his career at Delta State University. Savell posted a 5-6 mark and had a 3.87 earned run average. He struck out 64 batters. Second baseman Chris Pierce of Petal has transferred to William Carey College following a one-year stint on the Decatur campus. Pierce bat– ted .242 and had one home run, four doubles and 17 RBis. The 2005 Diamond Warriors, led by fourth– year head coach jake Yarborough, completed the season with a 29-23 record.
