Chaney's late free throws secure : ECCC win over Holmes in MACJC Tourney Kristin Chaney converted three of four throws
The Lady Warriors, the number three seed from the South, led 41 -28 at halftime. With the win, East Central ( 18-8) -the defend– ing MACJC and Region 23 champions- advances to the semi-finals to face Mississippi Delta Community College at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Delta (number four seed from the North) upset the top seeded South squad Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 83-77. Northeast - the top seed from the North– defeated Meridian (number four South seed) I08-80, and Northwest (North number three seed) outlasted Jones County (South number two seed) 78-66 in games held earlier Monday. Northeast and Northwest will bat– tle at I :30 p.m. Wednesday in the other semi-final contest. Finals in the women's division are set for 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by the men's championship game at 8 p.m. Competing for the men's state title are Copiah– Lincoln, East Mississippi, Itawamba, Pearl River, Northwest, Gulf Coast, Hinds and Coahoma. Chaney. a product of Nc\\10n County High School, also led the Lady Wam9rs in scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kim Cox of Lake pumped in 17 potnts and also pulled down seven rebounds. Other scorers were Shannon Lloyd of \\'est Lauderdale and Tierra Young of South Leake. eight each; Kotreeee Bender of Newton, seven; Jnd1a Backstrom ot 'le~hoba Central, four; and Heather Steele of Naruh Waiya, three. Ashley Howard had 15 points to lead Holmes ( 19-6), which rallied from a 17-point deficit to close within 62- 60 with 26 seconds remaining. But Chaney's clutch free throw shooting down the stretch represented the game's final points and EC held on for the narrow victory and its third wm over Holmes in 2004-05. The Lady Warriors earlier posted 61-59 and 69-60 (OT) decisions over the Lady Bulldogs, the number two seed from the North.
