EC 2, GuH Coast 0 East Central Communi– ty College's James Harris broke a scoreless game with a home run, and the Warriors pulled out a win on the frrst day of the Region XXIII Baseball Tournament. ECCC defeated the tour– nament's host team, Mis– sissippi Gulf Coast Com- munity College, 2-0 in a pitching-dominated con- test in the fmal of three games on Thursday. The Warriors and Bull– dogs combined for just nine hits in the nine– inning game. ECCC starting pitcher Josh Miller, who recorded . the win, gave up five hits with six strikeouts in the complete-game effort. Gulf Coast starter Miles Clark carried one hitter into the flfth inning, but after Har– ris' home run, the Bulldog hurler allowed four hits in nine innings. Clark had 16 strikeouts -striking out the last six hitters he faced-in the loss. ECCC added its second run in the sixth innng off an RBI single by Corey Coward that brought home Van Wilson. The Warriors recorded two hits in the sixth, the high– est hit total in one inning by either team.

Coward gave ECCC a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single. Warrior second baseman Joseph Cavenaugh of Decatur scored in the top of · third off an error by Trcr jans pitcher AntonioGarth, who tried to throw home after catching a high bounc- er from Coward, to give ECCC a 2-0 lead. Ken Gor– don of Morton increased the Warriors' lead to 3-0 with a solo home run over the left-field wall in the top of the fourth inning. ECCC designated hitter Ross Pine of Watson, La., drove in another run with a single in the top of the fifth, and Will Pearson of Decatur brought home a run with a double that bounced off the first-base bag for a 5-0 Warrior lead.

Warrior closer Kevin Hatch of Carthage, who earned the win over the Trojans on Saturday in a winners' bracket game, closed the game. The right– hander struck out two bat– ters and induced a game– ending line drive to Pierce at shortstop. "I don't care what the score is, I never say it is over against (Delta)," Yarborough said. "It was– n't over until it was over." Harris went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and an RBI, and Pearson went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. ECCC out-hit MDCC 11-3. The Warriors advanced
