PREP Savell pitches all nine innings in win over Bears By Tony Krausz I sports editor )T ·' PERKINSTON - Cody Savell let his defense do his job, and an East Central Community College pitcher completed another game in the Region XXIII Baseball Tournament on Friday. Savell pitched a complete game in the Warriors' 9-3 victory over Southwest Mississippi Community College (19-24) to advance in the regional winner's bracket. The loss eliminated Southwest from t~e tournament. Savell gave up three runs off eight hits with one strikeout in the win, as the Warriors defense didn't commit an error and executed two double J?lays in the win. ECCC (27-21) will face Meridian Community College at 4 p.m. today. The winner of that game will move into the regional championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The loser will play in an elimination game at 7 p.m. today. The Warriors should be in good shape on the mound for the championship run, as ECCC's Josh Miller pitched a complete-game shutout over host Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Thursday. "You need great defense and good pitching to win championships," said ECCC head coach Jake Yarborough. "We have only given up three runs in the last 18 innings. I couldn't be more pleased. "The defense made all the plays today. I can't take any of the credit," Savell said. "The defense and hitters did it all."
