By Marty Stamper staff writer DECATUR- Flexibility will be one of the strengths of the 2005 East Central Community College softball team. Most of coach Scott Hill's 17 players are capable of playing more than one position. Returning from last year's 21).16 team that advanced to the MACJC State/Region 23 Tour– nament are shortstop/catcher Kristin Chaney, pitcher/third baseman Marley Smith, second baseman Suzanne Chaney, right fielder Obreisha Davis, third baseman Kotreece Bender and center fielder Shelly Ferguson. "We feel like we've got some different options that we can use," Hill said. "I think that's going to be a key, especially early in the season when we're missing (Bender and Kristin Chaney) because of basketball. It's good to have a little variety
and folks that can do some dif– ferent things. "Hopefully, that will pay off for us as we get deeper in the season. You never can tell what might happen. You want girls that can adapt to change.~ ECCC opened with a 6-1. 8-5 sweep of Mississippi Delta on Monday. Also on the roster are second baseman Abby Miller, left fielder' Allison McDaniel. first baseman Chelsea Wade, catcher/shortstop April Boyd, pitcher/center fielder Lindsay Walker, first baseman Lauren White, right fielder Erica Hardin, pitcher Lindsey Smith, pitcher/left fielder Joy Cave– naugh, third baseman/left fielder Dominique Mapp and catcher Jennifer Smith. Most of HHI's team played on highly-successful programs in high school. McDaniel and Lindsey Smith were on Neshoba Central's Class 4A state runner-up team last year.
The Chancys, Cavenaugh. Davis, :viapp, Ferguson and Jennifer Smith were part of Class :~A state championships during their days at t-:ewton County. Walker and White played on Union's team that defeated both Class 1A-2A state champion Clarkdale and 1A-2A state runner-up Desoto Central last spring. In fact, Walker blanked Clarkdale 4-0. Miller played on a quality team at Madison Central. "We're fortunate to have some girls that have been in some big game:.." Hill said. "Hopefully, that will prove to be beneiicial for us. As you go
down the roster, you'll see that they come from good programs and I think that can only be good for us." The Lady Warriors won 26 of their 40 regular season games irr2004. "We feel good about that as a starting point," Hill said. "Hopefully, we can do a little better. We've got six sopho– mores back that played a lot. With the leadership from them and the freshmen coming in and tilling in some of those key spots, we feel pretty good about our chance to compdc in our division."
