Lady Warriors Set SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Shelly Ferguson and Obreisha Davis are veteranoutfielders who were also effective at the plate. Fergusondrove in 25 runs and led the team in doubles with nine. Davis flnished the 2004 campaign with a .315 batting average. She also scored 19 runs and swiped nine bases. Returning inflelders expected to again have productive seasons areKotreece Bender andSuzanne Chaney. Bender posted a .297 bat– ting average with five doubles and 15 RBis. Bender is also a bas– ketball standout and will join the softball squad after basketball season. Chaney had eight dou– bles, 21 RBis and led the team in walks with 24. In addition to the returning tal– ent on this year's squad, Hill said he is "very pleased" with the 11 freshmen who complete the 17- player roster. "We should receive help on the mound from three very capable freshmen - Joy Cavenaugh, Lindsay Walker and Lindsey Smith. All three will share pitch– ing duties," Hill said. Cavenaugh and Walker are also outfielders and Smith plays flrst base. Hill said that newcomers Allison McDaniel and Erica Hardin should provide needed depth in the outfleld. DECATUR-After leading the East Central Community College fast-pitch softball team to a suc– cessfu12004 season in his inaugu– ral year as head coach, Scott Hill is hoping his Lady Warriors will enjoy even more success in 2005. And he has good reason to be optimistic when this year's cam– paign started with a double-head– er against Mississippi Delta Community College Monday. All six returnees were stand– outs on last year's squad, which advanced to the state playoffs after placing second in the MACJ C Central Division with an 11-5mark. The LadyWarriors fell to tournament host Northeast Mississippi Community College (5-0) and Pearl River Community College (7-5) en route to anoverall 26-16 record. The top returnee from 2004 is Kristin Chaney who will again start at short stop. Chaney received second team All– American honors in DiviS.ion II and was named first team All– State. She flnished the season with a .413 batting average and had four triples, seven doubles and 15 RBis. She also stole 12 bases. Chaney, who is also a standout basketball player, will join the softball squad after bas– ketball season. Another top returnee is pitch– er/ flrst baseman Marley Smith who also made frrst team All– State. Smith recorded 13 wins on the mound and had a productive
