days . "I remember the commuter room." Burkes said. "It was a lillie, tiny room in Newton HaH. There were a few cha trS and lockers and a bath– room. It was a place for commuter students to\ tsit between classes.·· Burkes also has memories of at– tending chapel. She said, "Each person was as– srgned a seat for the en– tire semester when they registered ·for classes. So you wanted to be in the registration line with someone you didn ' t mind sitting by each day in chapel! Chapel was man– datory and if you missed three times you were sent before the discipline com– mittee... She also has fond memories of her instruc– tors. She said, "I was the ·Sis-A-Boom' in Dr. (Ri– chard) Ethridge 's class. The 'Sis-A-Boom' would have to tell him where he left otT the day before and also was the object of any examples he might gt\e during class." Burkes said she thought the name 'Sis– A-Boom' was selected in an earlier class when the person in that position was also a cheerleader!. "Dur– ing Miss Una Harris' class. I learned to write fast and to outline properly. which helped me to excel in m} classes after 1 went to se– niort:ollege," Burkes said. She said she also remem– bers being asked by Mtss Hams to lr.l\ el to Jacl,son to hear Eudora Welt~ speak. .. "-e too a small
