Yet both losses to Choctaw C;;:rmal ..vere of the convincing variety.

No. 6: Leake Academy Rebelenes - Doyle Wolverton's girls are 35-1 going into tOda_. s MPSA Class AA semifinal game w1th S1mpson Academy.

No. 7: Bay Springs Lady Bulldogs- Also 28-2 with a loss to Choctaw Central and aro:-e· to Wayne County.

On the brink of greatness- the girls' teams from Newton (23-9), Philadelphia (23-4). Sebastopol (22-3), Wayne County (21-6). and West Lauderdale (23-8). With a few breaks 1n the tournaments, who knows? Are there any good boys' basketball teams around? The girls have traditionally done better than the boys in this area when it comes to appearances in the state tournament afld it's unlikely to change this year. After Meridian's boys lost on opening night, the best bets to make it to Jackson are Quitman (20-11), Choctaw Central (26-5), West Lauderdale (23-8), Philadelphia (19-8), Heidelberg (18-7), Scott Central (25-6), and South Leake (16-11 , but 13-1 since Christmas) and none of them are what you would call a powerhouse.

In the MPSA, the girls from Heidelberg Academy (23-6) and Kemper Academy (23-9) have had good years, along with the boys from Heidelberg (23-8) and Winston (29-4).

What about MSU football coach Sylvester Croom telling Nick Turner to hit the road?

That's the best news out of Starkville involving the football team since the 2000 Independence Bowl win over Texas A&M for one simple reason ... it shows the inmates are no longer runn ing the asylum. It doesn't take a genius to figure out with the recent drug arrests of Dontae Walker and Derrick Taite why the program has gone to hit bottom over the last three years. While they haven't been convicted, it's a reasonable assumption they haven't been the only 'problems' either.
