Receives Mayes Scholarship - Melissa Estes (left) a 2002 graduate of Newton County High School, is the recipient of the Thomas Rudolph Mayes Memorial Scholarship to attend East Central Community College in Decatur. The Mayes Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the memory of Rudolph Mayes who taught English at the College for 28 years. The award was presented by Mr. Mayes' daughter, Jackie Etie (center), and her husband, Sid (right).

Receives Pace Scholarship - Newton County High School graduate Blair Anderson (left) is the 2002 recipient of the Polk and Jennie Pace Scholarship to attend East Central Community College in Decatur. This scholarship was established in 1997 by the family of Polk and Jennie Pace in memory of Lawrence Polk Pace who attended East Central in 1929. The outstand– ing student is shown with ECCC recruiter/Tech Prep Ca\'eer Center director Christi Lee Lewis.
