Shelby HarrisMemorial Scholarship established
A scholarship named in memory of the late Dr. Shelby L. Harris has been established a t East Central Commumty College in Decatur, announced Dr. Phil A. Sutphin, College president. The College's mathematics and computer science dhision along with other ECCC faculty and staff members and friends initiated the scholarship endowment in honor of Dr. Harris, a retired faculty mem– ber who died of a massive heart attack on May 14. He was 64. Dr. Harris retired from full– time teaching duties in 1999, following 36 years of sen;ce. He also served 13 years as chairman of the Mathematics and Science: Division. In addi– tion, Dr. Harris was the long– time advisor for Alpha Alpha Epsilon , t he national engineer– ing honor society for two-year colleges. He served 10 years as advisor of the College's Scholar Bowl team, which twice won top honors in state competition. Although retired from full-time service, Dr. Harris continued to teach on a part-time basis and served as Theta Xi advisor. Dr. Sutphin said perhaps Harris' greatest contribution to
the College was his work with Phi Theta Kappa. "Dr. Ranis was instrumen– tal in developing Theta Xi and led the chapter to honors in several categories at the local, state and national levels. He was also a member ofTheta Xi, having been tapped for the honor when he was a student at East Central. Dr. Harris was also an outstanding instructor, as evidenced by the number of his former students who now hav:e successful careers in the math and engineering fields," Dr. Sutphin said. Dr. Harris was selected the College's Academic Instructor of the Year in 1983 and was chosen Alumnus of the Year in 1999. Contributions to the Shelby L.
