local Authors Donate Works to ECCC - Literary works by local authors J. C. and Carolyn Matthews Simmons are now part of the extensive Mississippi collection available in Burton Library at East Central Community College in Decatur. The couple is shown presenting their publica– tions to Gloria Johnson, head librarian. Mr.Simmons, a retired airline/corporate pilot, recently published a series of mystery novels, including Blood on the Vine, Blind Overlook, Icy Blue Descent and Some People Die Quick. Mrs. Simmons, an ECCC alumnus, authored Seasons of Life, a collection of poems based on experiences through– out her life. She recently retired as executive director of the Mississippi Dental Associahon. The couple resides on a family farm in Newton Collnty.
Participate In Humanities Project - East Central Community College in Decatur is one of H colleges selected nationwide to participate in the Community College Humanities Association's · Advancing the Humanities in Teacher Preparation Programs at Community Colleges project. The spectal program is sup– ported by a $242,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. A three-member team from each par– ticipating college recently attended a national teacher preparation conference held in Washington, D. C., and received mentoring assistance from experienced humani– ties and education community college faculty members. Each team will develop national teacher preparation mod– els of collaboration between the humanities faculty and education faculty. The project models will ensure that the humanities are central to community college programs that recruit and educate the next generation of teachers. The project is being conducted in cooperation with the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Representing East Central Community College in the project are (from left) Dr. Lavinia Sparkman, vice president for instrllction; Linda Pierce, English instructor and division chairman; and Maudean Sanders, assistant dean for vocational-technical instruction.
