A Burrows Sargent, who , served as superintendent of Meridian Public Schools when she was honored in 1996. An educator for more than 35 years, Sargent cur– :ently serves as S\J.perinten– dent of the Jackson Public School District and a mem– ber of the State Board of Education. "The long-range goal of the award is to encourage women in education to con– tinue striving for excellence and to become role models for prospective and practic– ing school administrators to emulate," Lovell said. Dr. Lavinia Sparkman earned a bachelor's in ele– mentary education, a mas- "'-, '" COU!'lselor education, and a doctorate, all from Mississippi State Univer– sity. She has built an im– pressive record, beginning with her early years as an elementary teacher, coun– selor of abused and ne– glected children and chemically dependent adults, guide to high school students exploring occupa– tional and living skills, school-to-work transition manager, college instructor, and college administrator. As an elementary teacher, Sparkman's obser– vation of the need for good counselors from elementary through post-secondary may have been the moti– vating factor which prompted her to switch from teacher to counselor. The seed, however, may have been planted much earlier when~ as a young student hers ' n~ a counselor said stuck with her for .• ~.,
