Internaitonal competition, Dr. Hennigton and several team members presented results of the water quality project at the annual meeting of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences in Tupelo and during two occasions on the ECCC campus. The group's fmd– ings were also submitted to the De– partment ofEnvironmental Quality. Dr. Heru1ington was respon– sible for securing funds to conduct the water testing study. Fundirtg came from a $1000 grantprovided by NASA through the UniversityofMississippi. The Freeman Science award is not given every year, but only on those years when a submission mer– its the award. This is the first time any Mississippi college has won the pres– tigious honor . Competition was among over 1200 chapters from around the world. In addition to receiving the Freeman Science Award, Theta Xi re– ceived several other honors at the internaitonal convention. The ECCC group was one of only 10 chapters presented a Leader– ship HallmarkAward, which is givenn in recognition of\ superior achieve– ments in the leadership area. Theta Xi was also one of25 recipients ofthe Distinguished Chap– ter Award and was named among the Top 100 Chapters ofthe international organization. In addition, Dustin Addy of Decatur was among 10 recipients o f the Distinguished Officer Award. Addy, a graduate o(Newton County High School, serves as vice president for leadership. .. Thete Xi advisors are Dr. Shelby Harris, Ann Burkes and Christy Ferguson. Phi Theta Kappa has more than 1200 chapters at commumty, technical and junior colleges in all 50 states, Canada, Germany, Japan, and U.S. territories abroad.
