Building h ses at ECCC
By Fredrick Lyons Special to The Star
The Carpentry Program at East Central Community Col– lege in Decatur pronde.s stu– dents with knowledge and skill in all aspects of constructing a house using a conventional plan. Students learn how to 5et up and square building line.:: for a foundation using a laser level. They lay out, cut and install floo r walls and roof frame members. They learn how to install roofing materi– als, which include roofsheeting (decking), felt and shingles. When the roof is finished, students learn and take part in the exterior finish of the house. This includes setting and plumbing of doors and windows and the cutting and installing of siding and molding. After students in the elec– tricity program wire the house, and those in heating and air conditioning install the central heat and air unit and all the ductwork, the car– pentry students will complete the interior finish work to the house. This process will cover a wide range of skills, includ– ing cabinetmaking. Students learn more by actually building a house and are more interested because they can see a finished product.
