Livingston, who served 28 years in the state legisla– ture, was chairman of the House Game and Fish Committee and was an avid promoter of conservation and preservation of natural resources. Funding for the fitness trail project came from two grants and private dona– tions totaling $150,000. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the National Recreational Trails Fund– ing Program of t~e. Fed~ral Highway Adm1mstrat10n, u.S. Department of Trans– po rtation, provided the grants The jfirst grant was used to complete the fitnes::. trail--a half-mile trek that is paved, lighted and handicapped accessible. Twenty exercise stations were also added to the trail. Additional improve- ments include the planting of more than 70 trees native to Mississippi, and the in– stallation of several hand– made bird houses provided by a private donor. Many of the trees are la– beled with their scientific and common names and are part of the college's arbore– tum, which includes an out– door classroom overlooking the trail. The outdoor classroom was built with the assistance of students from the Newton County Vocational Center. A second grant of ap– proximately $80,000 will be used to extend the current trail and will include a rec– reational/study trail around the college lake. The extended trail, named in Livingston's honor, also will be paved, lighted, and hannicapped accessible.

1958-60 and was named the college's alumnus of the year in 1997. Dr. Phil A. Sutphin said naming the new trail in Livingston's honor is an appropriate gesture. "Rep. Livingston was a long-time friend of ECCC and h is interest in envi– ronmental issues and the college's fitness trail had a tremendous impact oo East Central. We are indebted to him for his assistance and advice in developing the project en the north side of the campus. He will be greatly missed," Sutphin said .
