to learn about more than just the computer. "She said, 'Mamaw, there is no need for you to go down there just to take computer. You would just love English Comp under Mr. (Ovid) Vickers," Graham said. "And I Lhought, well that's right, going down there for one thing just doesn't make sense." Graham gradually became a full-time student and a fixture on campus. She said she had com– puter during first period and English during third period, which lefL her with more time on her hands than she wanted. "I said I'm not just going to sit here and take nothing,~ she said. So she took speech. "After the first semester I liked it so much that I decided to come back," she said. Graham said she enjoys help– ing oLhers learn in her role as a teacher. Although she has no precise plans, she says she plans to keep on working. "I don't know how long I'll stay,., she said. wasn't expecting a salary," Gra– ham said. "I went on helping her (the teacher) and the next thing I knew she had me on payroll." Graham works with stu– dents ranging from their teens to near 70. · She quit school in 1935,when she was 16 years old, to marry Dow Graham. "I always regretted not getting my diploma," she said. "So when I got a chance I went back." She said that is why it is important to her to help others achieve goals that only an educa– tion can help them obtain. When she first began taking college classes, it was only so that she could learn to use a com– puter. "I had been secretary of my church for 50 years and I said that if the church would buy me a computer I would learn how to use it," she said. "They said they would, so that's what I did." Her granddaughter, who has a master's degree in English, encouraged Graham
