urkes Receives Prestigious hi Theta Kappa Award

Kappa's 1200 two-year colleges from around the world. The award, presented in recognition of outstanding service programs a~sisting two-year colleges and surrounding communities, is named for the Society's late executive director emeritus, Dr. Margaret Mosal. The award carries a $2000 stipend that Burkes has desig– nated to be applied to the Stella W. Newsome Scholar– ship at ECCC. Only chapter advisors or regional coordina– tors who previously received a Giles Distinguished Advisor Award or Regional Coordmator Award are eligible to apply for the Mosal Award. Burkes has served as head 1 i brarianat East Central for th£ past 31 years. She ha::. abo had a long-time association wtlh Plu Theta Kappa - she became a member of the Society in 1963 while a student at ECCC. In addition to her role as Theta X chapter co-advisor, Burke::. served a term oo the Advisory Board for the Mtssts– sippi/Louisiana Reg10nal. re– garding her associat on with r::ccc and Phi Theta Kappa, Burkes said, "l arn extremely fortunate to have the total support of the admimstration, f..1culty and staff of the College

Burkes also expressed her feelings about receiving the Mosal Award. Many thoughts ran through my mind as I realized my name had been called to receive the Mosal Award. I felt a deep sense of appreciation for the trust placed in me to use the stipend to help with scholar– ships for students at East Cen– tral.
