ECCC Theta Xi receives honors Several honots were presented to ECCC's Theta Xi Chap– ter of Phi Theta Kappa, the mtcrnational honor society for two-year colleges, at the organization's annual convention held in Orlando. ECCC President Dr. Eddie M. Smith, who serves as regional ambassador, was presented a Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to college presidents who ha\ e shown outstanding support of Phi Theta Kappa and are retmng from their careers. Dr. Smith will end 15 years of ::.erv1ce at ECCC when he retires on June 30. Former Theta Xi adviser Dr. Shelby Harris was one of 10 selected for the Alumni Hall of Honor. This award was based on his long-te\m "extraordinary" efforts to support Phi Theta Kappa on the local, regional and national levels. Adviser Ann Burkes was named a recipient of the Mosal Award for Leadership, which IS presented to only four ad– visers in recognition of outstandmg -:ervice to the college and the community. The award is named for the society's late ex– ecutive director emeritus, Dr. Margaret Mosal. The award carries a $2000 stipend that will be applied to the Stella W. Newsome Scholarship at ECCC. Theta Xi is ranked 54th of all chapters submitting Hall- mark Award entries. Over 450 chapters participated in the annual co mpetition.
