ECCC Lady Warriors Defeat Jones, Gulf Coast

East Central Community College's Lady Warriors improved to 17-3 overall and 7- 2 in South Div1sion competition following wins over Jones and Gulf Coast in hoop action last week. Ellake Murray of Scott Central and Wendy Mapp of Newton County tallied 15 points apiece and led the East Central women to an easy 95-55 win over the homestanding Lady Bobcats on January 28, and Tonya Moncrief of Newton pumped in 24 points to pact the Lady Warriors in their 77-71 victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs January 25 in Brackeen-Wood gym. Other scorers in the Jones matchup were Tonya Moncrief, 13; Sonya Pinkston of Forest, 10; Sharae Brown of Scott Central, Charissa Williams of Houma, La., Krystal CoUrtney of Holden, La. and Quintina Edwards of Whistler, Alabama, eight points each; and LaShanta Lyles of Morton, Arletha Moncrief of Newton and Felisha Temple of Newton County, two each. EC led 50-28 at half-time. Also scoring in the win over Gulf Coast were Pinkston, 12; Courtney, 11; Brown, nine; Murray, eight; Mapp, five; Williams, four; Temple and

Lyles, two each. The Lady Warriors held a 39-35 advantage at the break. In men's action, the Warriors dropped to 8-12 and 1-8 following losses to Jones (66-57) and Gulf Coast (51-47). Pointmakers in the Jones contest were Ken Russell of Newton County, 13; Lamond Bowie Morton and Demando Mingo of Choctaw Central, 11 each; Otis Wallace of Memphis, nine; Keith Bell of Choctaw Central, seven; Ray Waddell of Philadelphia, four; and Courtney Jones of South Leake, two, The score was tied 23-23 at half-time. In games this week, East Central hosted Southwest en Monday and will entertain Co– Lin oo Thursday, Feb. 8. The Warriors will play Mississippi College Junior varsity squad Tuesday, Feb. 2 in A E. Wood Coliseum oo the Clinton campus. Regular season action concludes week of ~b. 8 when EC squads travel to Hinds Feb. 8th and Crowley's Ridge in Arkansas Feb. 11. South Division Tournament action is scheduled February 15-18 at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville.
