Former NFL Coach Rutigliano to speak on ECCC campus Former National Football
Maryland. He entered the pro ranks in 1967, serving as an assistant at Denver, New– England, New York Jets and New Orleans before being named head coach in Cleveland in 1978. During his tenure with the browns, Rutigliano was twice named AFC Coach of the Year by Untied Press International, and was selected NFL Coach of the Year in 1980 after leading Cleveland to an 11-5 record and the AFC Central Division title. He left the Browns dur– ing the 1984 season and became a color commentator for ESPN and NBC from 1985- 1988. Rutigliano was chosen head football coach at Liberty University in Lynchb\lrg, Virginia, in 1989, where he is completing his 40th year irt coaching. In addition to his coaching career, Rutigliano has authored several publications, including the 1986 Pro
Football Scouting Report, and his autobiography titled, Pressure. He also remains in great demand as a speaker through– out the entire western world. He conducts coaching clinics as far away as Australia and Italy and is .in constant demand as a motivational I speaker throughout the United States. In recognition of Rutigliano's career as a suc– cessful coach and athlete, he was selected to the East Central Community College Athletic Hall of Fame for 1999 · an"d was recognized during homecoming activities held in October. However, due to a scheduling conflict involving his Liberty University football team, Rutigliano was unable 1 to attend the induction cere– mony and was represented by his wife, Barbara, and daugh– ter, Kerry Rutigliano.
League head coach Sam Rutigliano will speak to the student body at East Central Community College during a special assembly program scheduled 'fuesday, Dec. 7, on the Decatur campus. Rutigliano, who has guided the Liberty University football program since 1989, will begin his remarks at 10:45 a.m. in Huff A,uditorium. The New York native is a 1951 graduate ofNewton CountyAgricultural High School, then a part of East Central Junior College. Rutigliano was a . standout member of the Warrior football and basketball teams prior to continuing his athletic career at the University ofTennessee, which won the national foot- 1 ball championship in 1952.
