Warrior defense plays key role in win over Southwest Prior to ~ursday night's gridiron battle betweenEast Central and Southwest community colleges, it was the Bears' defense that was getting all the attentton, and rightfully so. After_ all, Southwest was recognized as the state's top rushing defensive unit, allowing minus I0 yards through four games. Few observers expected the Warriors to run on Southwest, even though sophomore H-back Steve Henley of Louisville came into the contest ranked third m rushmg ~•th 423 yards on 59 carries, an average of 105.8 yards per game. But the ECCC coaching staff issued a challenge to Warnor offensive and defensive units, and both groups responded, resulting in a 12-0 shutout over the homestanding Bears. East Central bas now won its fourth stratght contest, and currently has the best overall and division marks at 4-1 and 2-0, respectively. Southwest fell to 3-2 and 0-1. It was the defense that set up the Wamors' first score -- a one-yard burst by Henley midway through the opening period. Sophomore linebacker Lacey McBeath ofNesboba Central had earlier recovered a Southwest fumble

at the Bears' 23-yard line. Henley found paydtrt stx plays later. Sophomore Josh Hardy of Philadelphia barely missed this PATattempt. The Warrior defense kept the Southwest attack in check most ofthe night, as the Bears never came close to scoring. The Bears managed JUSt 58 yards rushing on 34 carries - and completed onl>· three of 10 passes for 24 yards. Southwest had just five first downs. The East Central offense got cranlong in the second half, and mounted an impressi" e 62-yard scoring drive in the fina l stanza to clinch the victory. Henley again got the nod for the tally, as he crossed the goal line from nine yards out with just over three minutes remaining. The Warriors were unsuccessful on the two-point conversion. Offensively, the Warriors rushed 41 times for 172 yards. Sophomore tailback Jarmarcus Murray led EC with 7 1 yards on 10 carries. Henley had 51 yards on 20 attempts. Garner completed three of seven passes for 37 yards. East Central has 12 first downs. The Warriors will be homecoming guests of Hinds Community College this Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7:30p.m. on the Raymond campus.
