EC Basketball Underway Basketball season got under– way November 4 for East Central Community College's Lady War– rior and Warrior squads who began 1996-97 action by compet– ing in a two-day invitational tournament held at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville. Games continued on Nov. 11 at Scooba, thenonNov.18,at6p.m. and 7:45 p.m. in the Brackeen– Wood Physical Education Build– ing, both Warrior teams will play Scooba Lions and Lady Lions. The Lady Warriors feature five returnees from last year's 17-11 squad which won the MACJC South Division title for the sec– ond straight season. Retumeed include guards Jennifer Mus– grove of Leake Academy, Olivia McDaniel and Felicia Brantley, both ofNeshoba Central; and for– wards Tara Hall of Leake Academy, Chazz Thompson of Philadelphia and Stephanie Houston of Carthage. Freshman players are guards Sandra Lampkin of Newton County, Nicole Barrett of Mor– ton, Stephanie Gray of Lake, Lakeshia Kennedy of Forest, Monica Craig of Louisville and Cheretta Perry of Strong, Arkan– sas; center Danyelle Johnson of Forest; and forwards Jamie Floyd ofSmackover, Arkansas and Kim

The Lady Warriors are coach– ed by Sammy Pace who is begin– ning his twelfth year at East Cen– traL Pace was named the state juco association's "Women's Basketball Coach of the Year'' fol– lo~g .th7 1995-96 campaign. This year's Warrior squad includes nine sophomores who include Maurice Jones (6'2") and Darrick Massey (6'3"), both of Forest; Maurice Bowie (6'7") and Robert Earl Shephard (6'5"), both of Morton; Gary Butler (6'4") of Sebastopol, Jason Smith (6'4") of Union, Joe Green (6'1") of Leake Academy, Marcus Hill (6'3'') of Heidelberg and Freddie Jowers (6'6") ofSweetwater, Alabama. Freshmen team members are Toronto Parker (6'1") of Forest, Desmond Reed (6') of Carthage, Danielle Johnson (5'8") of Hele– na, Georgia; Herbert Montgom– ery (6') of Lafayette, La.; and Gil– berto Venzen of Eastman, Ga. Marty Cooper, assisted by his wife, Jennifer, begin their sixth season as Warrior coaches.
