Basketball season underway at EC

Basketball season got under– way November 4 for East Cemral Community College's Lady Warrior and Warrior quad ~ ho began 1996-97 action by competing in a two-day invitational tourna– ment held at Jone County Junior College in Ellisville. Both ECCC teams ~ill con– tinue their road trip by challenging East Mtssissippi in Scooba on November 11, prior to hostmg the Lady Lions and Lions tn the Brackeen-Wood Ph} 'tea I Education Building on Monday, November 18. Game times are 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The Lady Warriors feature five returnees from last year' 17- 11 squad which won the \1ACJC South Division title for the econd– straight season. Returnee include guards Jennifer Musgrove of Leake Academy, Olivia McDaniel and Felicia Brantley, both of Ne.,hoba Central: and forwards Tara H;jJI of Leake Academy, Chazz Thompson of Philadelphia and Stephanie Hou!>lon of Carthage. Fre!>hmen player!> are guards Sandra Lampkin of Ne~ ton Count), Nicole Barrett of Morton, Stephanie Gray of Lake, Lakeshia Kennedy of Forest, Monica Craig of Louisville and Cheretta Perr) of Strong, Arkansas: center Danyelle Johnson of Forest; and forwards

Jamie Floyd of Smackover, Arkansas and Kim MiGliore of New Orleans, Louisiana. The La-dy Warriors are coached by Sammy Pace who is beginning his twelfth year at East Central. Pace was named the state juco assoctattons "Women's Basketball Coach of the Year" fol– lowing the 1995-96 campaign. Serving as Pace's assistant is Eric White. This year's Warrior squad includes nine sophomores who include Maurice Jones (6'2") and . Darrick Massey (6'3"), both o( Forest; Maurice Bowie (6'7") and Robert Earl Shephard (6'5"), both of Morton: Gary Butler (6'4") of Sebastopol, Jason Smith (6'4") of Union, Joe Green (6' I") of Leake Academy, Marcus Hill (6'3") of Heidelberg and Freddie Jowers (6'6") of Sweetwater, Alabama. Freshman team members are Toronto Parker (6 ') of Forest, Desmond Reed (6') of Carthage, Danielle Johnson (5' 8") of Helena, Georgia: Herbert Montgomery (6') of Lafayette, Louisiana; and Gilberta Venzen of Eastman, Georgia. Marty Cooper is beginning his sixth season as Warrior head mentor. His wife, Jennifer, serves as as!>tistant coach.
