graduates achieve 100% pass rate

· For the first time since the program was initiated in 1992. a 100 percent pass rate on the state board examinat ion was achieved on first write by licensed practical nursing (LPN) graduates at East Central Community College in Decatur. Members of the 1996 LPN class reached thfl perfect mark; in addition, all 21 graduate:, who received their certificates in August are either employed in the workforce or are continuing their education in the medical field. Steady improvement has beE'n made since the vocational course of study was fir~t offered, when 19 of 25 graduates (76 percent) passed state boards on their first attempt. In 1994, 16 of 17 graduates (94 percent) passed the exam on their first try followed by 10 of 11 (90 percent) who achieved the same goal in 1995. Serving as LPN instructor<: are Sandra Thomas and Katharine Buckman. Students who have completed course requirement' in the college's other health related areas of study have also found success. All 32 graduates of the

.:.urgical technology program, begun in 1993, are employed in their respective field or are pursuing medical -related degrees. In addition, each graduating class (10 in '94; 11 in '95; and 11 in '96) has had members to place in the top 10 of the surgical skills competition in the National Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) Contest. Ea-.t Centr a l graduated its fir<:t class of associate degree nur...ing students in May, 1996, with 18 of 20 members (90 percent) passing state boards on their first attempt. One student has since retaken and passed the exam. All 20 ADN graduates ar.e employed. Nancy Harris is the director of the ADN program. Instructors arh Monelle Clifton, Patricia Long Gaddis, Cynthia M. Gaudin, Dr. ·Jane Hurst. Brenda Kirby, Martha l\lcElhenney and Kasandra Reynolds. The college recently completed construction of the Associate Degree Nursing/ Child Care Technology Building which houses both programs of study.
