E'burg grad found dead at ECCC Newton County officials late Tuesday were still waiting for results of an autopsy on an Edinburg youth found dead in a dormitory at East Central Community College. Samuel Lamar Beckham, 20, was discovered dead in his room by his roommate about 9 a.m. Thesday, a Decatur police spokesman said. Beckham had apparently died in his bed, but the cause of death was undetermined, pending reports from an autopsy conducted that day in Jackson. There were no early indications of foul play. Officials said Beckham's roommate came into their room on the second floor ofTodd Hall to wake Beckham for morning classes. When the roommate was unable to rouse Beckham help was sought. The sheriff's department was called about 10 a.m. He was the son of Harold Beckham and Deborah Tidwell Worthington. Beckham was the 1994 valedictorian at Edinburg High School where he finished with a 96.22 average. At EHS he was remembered as a top student wh 1 o was well-liked, but who was especially fond of reading. He was a member of the Beta Club, the Science Club, the · Library Club and FFA.
