Home folks: Mothering girls at ECCC dorm

For Betb Doty, the wor~;;t part of her JOb is the three months she h "lS off every sum– mer. "It may sound crazy," Doty said. "But ~ 1· ke bemg here and doing my O\\ n little thing." Doty is ilie dorm supervisor for Newsome Hall, the sopho– more worn n's dorm at East Central Community College in Decatur. ''They used to call us dorm mothers," she said. "That's more appropriate than dorm supervi– sor. I do more mothering than I do supervising ofmy girls." Doty, who began her sixth year as at ECCC on Sunday, said she loves being with the girls. "I like that mothering feel-

ing," she said, "the feeling that you are needed." She said her days are fairly JU8Y because ~he tries to keep her girls happ 'Tm always doing things to make their liv- u....;;....;:,.._::::..._...:..:.:;:.;;.....;-"~ Doty ing here as nuch like living at home as I can," she said. "I try to help them adjust." Doty said she thinks living in a dorm, even at a community college, is a good step for a young per son. "It helps them get used to living on their own," she said.

Doty said the most rewarding part of her JOb is when one of her girls comes back to tell her how ' he helped them her when she was at EUCC. Before coming to ECCC worked, Doty as a houseparent at thP Baptist Children's Village in Jackson and at the Masonic Home in Meridian. In her ::;pare time, Doty likes to read. crochet and sew. "I do a lot of sewing for the girls," she said. "I sometimes sew for the school. like for the football team." Doty has two step-children. Lee in a football coach in Koscuisko, and Sharon is cur– rently attending Missis~ippi State University.
