Courtesy photo Vowell Scholarship awarded - Tara Renaud of Carthage is the recipient of the Lavern Vowell Memorial Scholarship to attend East Central Community College. Tara, a freshman business major at ECCC and an hon– ors graduate of Carthage High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. joe Renaud of Carthage. The Lavern Vowell Scholarship, which provides tuition for two semesters, was established in 1993 by Elizabeth Vowell, and her sons E. L. and David, to honor their husband and father, Lavern Vowell, and to assist a worthy ECCC student. A pioneer Winston County family, the Vowells operate Sunflower Food Stores in Louisville, Noxapater, Philadelphia, Newton, Carthage and Forest. Chris Vowell, shown at left presenting the scholarship, is the grandson of Elizabeth Vowell and of Iris Massey; he manages the Sunflower Store in Newton. Gene Gunn, at right in photo, manages the Sunflower Store rn Carthage.
