Co-Lin Defeats ECC

Freshmen running backs Xa– vier Thomas and Freddie May, both of Tuscaloosa, each rushed for over 100 yards but their efforts fell just short as East Central Community College lost its home opener to Copiah– Lincoln by a 17-13margin. East Central, which dropped to 0-2 on the young season, grabbed an early lead against its South Division opponent when May found paydirt with 9:06 left in the first period . Peyton Weems of Louisville kicked the PAT. The 89-yard scoring drive came on t};le Warriors' first possession. Co-Lin (2-0) answered the East Central tally with a 29-yard field goal by Brent Logan near the end of the initial period. The scoring drive covered 70yards. The visiting Wolves later took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on a three-yard burst y running back Greg Buchanan, capping a 52-yarad march. Logan added the PAT. On their next possession, the Warriors drove 94 yards to re– capture the lead on May's seven– yard run. Weems' PAT was blocked by Co-Lin defender GregMadison. A key play on the scoring drive was a 64-yard flea flicker, with quarterback Steven Crotwell of Morton firing a strike to Neshoba Central's Jamie Day who then lofted a perfect aerial to wide receiver Calvin Williams of Carthage which gave the War– riors possessio on the Co-Lin 20. Co-Lin later put the game's final points on the scoreboard when quarterack Walter Butler connected with wingback Brian Webb on a three-yard touch- ...

do"vn pass with just eight sec– onds remaining before halftime. The PAT was good. The winning drive covered 80 yards. EC appeared to be heading for a possible game-winning score late in the fourth quarter, when the Warriors took possession on their own 11 with 3:54 remaining and steadily marched upfield. However EC could only reach the Co-Lin 38 before giving up possession on downs. EC which was unable to gen– erate much offense in its season– opening loss at Holmes, had 255 yards rushing, 126 yards passing and gained 15 first sowns against Co-Lin. Thomas led the offensive at– tack with 102 yards on 13 carries, followed by May's 101-yard per– formance on 21 attempts. Full– back Marty Stojkovic of Tusca– loosa was the third leading rusher with 47 yards on 11 carries. Crotwell had an impressive performance as the Warrior field general, and a]$o completed pas– ses to four different receivers for a 62-yard total. Receptions were made by Tim Livmgston of Carthage, one for 29 yards; Day, on for 15 yards; Chad Scelfo of Lafayette, LA, one for 10 yards; and Thomas, one for six yards. Williams was also on the receiv– ing end of a 64-yard pass from Day on the flea flicker play.

East Central travels to North– west Mississippi Community College Thursday for a nondivi– sion battle on the Senatobia cam– pu . Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
