Business group has meeting at ECCC The fir t Newton County Future Busmess Leaders of America (FBLA) meeting was held recently on the East Centr- al Community College campus. The meeting, sponsored by the Newton County Academy chapter of the FBLA, was intended to unite the Newton Countyn FBLA members and give them the opportunity to expand their leadership skills. The county-wide gathering of high school students was the first of its kind in the county. Newton County Academy FBLA president Richard Black– bum developed and organized the meeting to build a partner– ship with fellow FBLA mem– bers. The goal is for the various county chapters to work together for the betterment of FBLA and Newton County and exchange ideas for communica- tion and leadership. Blackburn is also serving this year as the FBLA state treasurer for Mississippi. Featured speaker for the con– ference was Ovid Vickers, an English teacher at East Central who recently retired. Vickers spoke to the group on the many changes that have occurred during his lifetime and the rapid changes and advances the students likely will see during their lifetimes. Other speakers on the prog– ram were Amanda Harris and Valarie Buggs. Harris, FBLA central district vice president, represented the Mississippi Chapter of FBLA. Buggs, ECCC sophomore and former FBLA member at NCA, welcomed the FBLA mectihg attendees. Chapters attending the con- - – fcrencc were Newton High _

at the last minute. Each chapter was given an opportunity to provide highlights of their activities and projects. FBLA promotes leadership and management skills and helps to· prepare high school students to become the business leaders of tomorrow.
