Wood retired iDI974 wi!h 26 years service to the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and returned home to Louisville. A bout with throat cancer in 1975 and reactions to radiation treatments caused Wood's larynx to deteriorate. This resulted in a laryngectomy for Wood in 1985. He uses a speech aid today, but refuses to let this limit his abili– ties to doanything he wants. Wood took a job with Firestone (now TRW) in Louisville in 1981 as a technical service representative. He retired again in 1989 with eight Year'S' of service. Today, he continually supports East Central. He is a life– time member of rhe ECCC Alumni Association and an annual contribu– tor to the Warrior Club, which sup– ports ECCC athletics. He attends many sporting events and donated golf balls to the golf team last year. He also traveled many years with the Lady Warrior Basketball team when his sister, Lucille Wood, served as head coach. He is married to Ann Willis of Alexander City, Ala. They have two sons; James, Jr., who is married to Rene Dornbush and an Anny major– elect stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Melbourne, Fla., and Scott. who works for Polo/Ralph Lauren in SanFrancisco, Calif.

Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building on the Decatur Campus. Wooo continued his athletic career on a football scholarship to the University of Idaho. He stayed for one tenn and returned to East Central serving as the football team trainer. He then left East Central on a foot– ball scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi. After only three months, he became involved in the Korean War Conflict and enlisted in the Air Force in Hatties– burg. Athletics continued to be a part of his life in the Air Force.
