La-Z-Boy sets up scholarship A scholarship to attend East Central Community College in Decatur has been established by La– Z-Boy South in Newton, officials have announced. The $1000 award will be presented annually to a minimum of two in-district students with preference given to students who reside in Newton County. To qualify, recipients must be legal Mississippi residents who plan to enroll the next semester as full– time students on the Decatur cam– pus. Students must also have earn– ed a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on all previous college credit course work or a "B" average on all previous high school course work . In addition, recipients must have demonstrated a hi&}t level of participation in extracurricular ac– tivities and/ or community involvement. Vowell scholarship available at ECCC Applications are being accepted from students interested in receiv– ing the Lavern Vowell Memorial Scholarship to attend East Central Community College in Decatur. Established in 1993 by Elizabeth, E.L. and David Vowell in memory of their husband and father, Mr. Lavern Vowell, the scholarship is awarded each year to an entering freshman and covers the cost of tui– tion for two semesters. To qualify for the scholarship recipients must: I) major in some field of business administration; 2) have a demonstrated need for financial assistance; and 3) have a demonstrated potential for academic success. Preference will be given to ap– plicants for the scholarship who are ' or have been employed by Triple V, Inc. Applications for the scholarship will be reviewed by the college's Dean of Students. Final selection of each year's recipient will be made by the college's scholarship ,committee. Kappa Kappa Iota attends Convention Six members of the Upsilon Con– clave of Kappa Kappa Iota recent– ly attended the State Kappa Con– vention in Starkville. The Starkville Kappas hosted a reception for President Marie Hinson at the Holi– day Inn the evening before the con– vention. Following the reception, Hinson presided over a meeting of the Executive Committee. Myerl Langford, State Treasurer, and Sandra Amis, State Parliamen– tarian, were present for the session. Upsilon Conclave will again be represented with state officers for 1995-96. Alice Pouncey of Decatur was installed as Corresponding Secretary. Myerl Langford of Con– ehatta will serve again as State Treasurer. Alisia McMillan of Newton was elected to the State Nominating Committee. Other local members attending the con– vention were: Lillian Horton, Judy Harrison, and Carleen Gilmore.
