ECCC women move into first-place tie

The East Central Community College basketball teams swept Hinds at home before splitting a doubleheader at Pearl River in last week's basket– ball action. With the two South Division wins, the Lady Warriors improved to 3-1 in league play and 7-3 overall. The Lady Warriors are tied with Copiah– Lincoln for first place in the division.

The Warriors split two games as their re.cord went to 2-2 in the division and 4-6 overall. The Warriors are tied for thirtl in league play. EC women 83, Hinds 82 Mona Owens scored a putback off her own miss with two seconds remaining to give the Lady Warriors the Dec. 4league win at Decatur.

Owens .finished witb a game-high 24 points, while Melody Reed ldhl 23. Angie Lyles had 11, Kim Gentry six, Jennifer Alexander five, Tara Hall and Olivia McDaniel both had four, while Pachasia Thompson ood Stephanie Houston both scored three. After trailing 44-42 at halftime, EC built a 55-50 lead with 16 minutes remaining only to have Hinds take a 6 1-56 advantage with 11:37 to go. The Lady Warriors then claimed a 71-65 lead with 4:17 showing and had a 77-72 edge with 2:05left before Hinds went up 82-81 on a basket by Kris– tina Holden with just 12 seconds remaining. EC improved to 6-3 overaJI and 2- l in the South Division. Hinds feU to 6-5 overall. Helen Johnson led Hinds with 18 points. • EC men 76, Hinds 54: The Warriors broke open a tight game by outscoring Hinds 49-29 in the second half. EC improved to 4-5 overaJl and 2-1 in the South Division. Maurice Bowie led EC with 18 points, while Darvis Rasberry addfd 17, O.J. McNichols bad 14, Robert Earl Shephard eight, Chris Luckett six, Bobby Viverette five, while Mark Nance and Maurice Jones both had four. Joseph McKenney led Hinds with 18, while Keenon Sanders added 16. • EC women 76, Pearl River 75: The Lady Warriors outscored Pearl River 43-33 in the first half and held on to take a rare win at Poplarville Thursday night. EC improved to 7-3 overaJl and 3-1 in the South Division, while Pearl River fell to 2-12. Owens again led EC with 13 points, while Tara HaJJ had 12, Stephanie Houston and Melody Reed both had 11, Olivia McDaniel and Felicia Bran– tley both had eight, Kim Gentry six, and Christy Madison scored five. • Pearl River men 87, EC 69: The Warriors trailed by only five (38-33) at halftime, but the Wildcats quickly pulled away in the second half to take Thursday's contest at Poplarville. EC got 16 points from Robert Earl Shephard, 10 from Darvis Rasberry, eight each from Gary Butler and Jacob Carr, and seven each from Mark Nance and Maurice Bowie.
