ECCC headed to Nationals It was a double sweet victory for East Central Community College coach Sammy Pace and his women's basketball team whose 66-62 victory over arch-rival Pearl River Thursday night at Mississip– pi College not only avenged four earlier losses but gave the Lady Warriors their first-ever Region 23 championship! Region 23 and were earlier selected frrst team All-State. East Central advanced to the finals by defeating Northwest (94-84) in semi-final action and Holmes (88-87 OT) in frrst-round competition. Davis whose efforts deadlock the game at 77-77. On the evening, Reed had 20 points followed by Evelyn Nelson's 14 and Memory Hunter with 13. Holmes led 61-39 at halftime. Another successful campaign came to a close for Marty Cooper's Warriors who dropped a 70.()() deci– sion to Gulf Coast in first-round tournament competition.

Evelyn Nelson led the EC attack against Northwest with 22 points. Other top scorers were Rena Reed, 18; Carla Leflore, 15; and Memory Hunter, 12. The Lady Warriors led 48-44 at halftime. With the game as well as the season at stake, Rena Reed fulflll– ed every basketball player's dream as she sank two free throws with three seconds remaining which gave EC an 88-87 overtime win against Holmes. The Lady Warriors will now take their 25-6 record to the National NJCAA Women's Tournament which gets underway the week of March 14 at Tyler (Texas) Junior College. East Central begins com– petition in the double-eliminati6n tournament at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, against either Central Arizona or Utah who are still in– volved in region tournament action. Finals are set for Saturday, March 19. Led by Rena Reed's 19 points, East Central stayed mostly in com– mand of the Lady Wildcats who ended the season with 26-5 mark under Polly Kirkland. EC led 44-32 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats had earlier defeated East Central in the fmals of the State (79-64) and South Divi– sion (78-76) tournaments, and twice during regular season competition (85-82 and 105-101 in double– overtime). Other scorers besides Reed were Carla Leflore, 14; Evelyn Nelson, 10; Memory Hunter, 7; Cyntia Ellis, 6; Jamala Odom and Monica Davis, 4 each; and LaDonna Robinson and Dane Vance, 1 each. Gulf Coast led 45-30 at halftime. Mann and Coleman were nam– ed All Region 2.3 and selected on the All Region 23 Tournament Team. Both were also named frrst team All-State. Miller was chosen honorable mention All-State. East Central, which won the South Division Tournament, ftnish– ed the season with a 23-5 record.
