ECCC basketball teams both finish second at state tourny

Warriors and Lady Warriors in Region 23 event at MC

The East Central Community Col– lege Warriors and Lady Warriors both placed second in last week 's state junior college basketball tour– nament at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville. Both ECCC teams are playing in this week's Region 23 Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton. The 22-6 Lady Warriors opened with Holmes, while the 23-4 Warriors faced Gulf Coast in Tuesday's quarterfinal action. If successful last night, they will play in tonight's semifinals. The fi nals are set for Thursday night. ECCC WOMEN 100, NORTHEAST 89: The Lady Warriors knocked off the host Lady Tigers on Feb. 21 to reach the state finals. ECCe. 22-5, led by 10 <48-38l at halftime. Nor theast got to within four 1 80-76 ) before ECCC closed with a 20-13 run. Evelyn Nelson led ECCC with a game-high 25 points, while Rena Reed and Monica Davis both added 22. Carla Leflore scored 10, Jamala Odom seven, Cyntia Ellis five, a nd LaDonna Robinson had four. Northeast, 20-5, got 22 points from Dee Roberts and 15 each from Chan– da Cordova and Valerie McNeil. East Central ......... 48 52 - 100 Northeast . . . 38 51 - 89 ECCC MEN 103, NORTHWEST 101: The Warriors led by 14 points with 12-and-a-half minutes remaining and managed to hold off the Rangers, who scored 62 points in the second half, to claim the Feb. 21 win. Marcus Mann led 23-3 ECCC with 29 points despite having to sit out over eight minutes of the second half due to foul troubles. ECCC also got 20 points from An– thony Coleman, 14 from Cederic Sledge, 13 from Michael Coats. 11 from Eric Morgan, 10 from Stacy Miller. a nd four from Philip Prince. PEARL RIVER WOMEN 79, ECCC 64: Pearl River beat the Lady War– riors for the fourth time in as many meetings in the Feb. 22 champion– ship contest. The 22-6 Lady Warriors found themselves trailing by 11, 44-33, at halfime as Elaine Powell had al– ready scored 27 points for PRCC. Monica Davis led ECCC with 16 points, while Memory Hunter scored 14, Evelyn Nelson and Carla Leflore both had seven, Rena Reed and La– Danna Robinson both had six, and Jamala Odom added four. Powell led 24-4 Pearl River with a game-high 37 points, while Laveta Willis added 18 as the Lady Wildcats won their first stale championship in school history. East Central . . . . . .... 33 31 - 64 Pearl River .... . ...... 44 35 - 79 NORTHEAST MEN 90, ECCC 79: Northeast came back from a 35-32 halftime deficit to win the Feb. 22 ti– tle game on its home court. A 14-2 Tiger run gave Northeast a 60-48 lead with 9: 30 remaining. Marcus Mann scored a game-high 33 points to lead 23-4 ECCC. Anthony Coleman added 12. Michael Coats had eight, Eric Morgan and Stacy Millerboth had seven, and Anthony Huddleston scored four.
