Region 23 tourney to start Monday at MC

Team boasts talent: All-state basketball teams feature some of the nation's best JC talent, espe– cially Northeast's Dontae Jones and Pearl River's Elaine Powell. Besides Jones, the North men's first team includes teammate Todd Sorrell, Northwest's Sa n chez Blake, East's Marcus Tallis and Itawamba's Bradd Ball. The South first teamers are East Central's Marcus Mann and Anthony Cole– man, Pearl River's TorinoEdwards, Co-Lin's DeCarlos Anderson and GulfCoast's Sam Bowie. North women's first teamers are Northeast's Dee Roberts, Delta's Shannon Horne, Northwest's Shantell Atkins, Itawamba's Nei– sha Dobbs and Holmes' Mahalia McDonald. The South picks in ad– dition to PoweU and PR teammate Lavet a Willis are East Central's Rena Reed an~ Evelyn Nelson and Hinds' Latina Edwards. Mississippi junior college bas– ketball playoffs continue into a third week with the Region 23 tour· nament next week at Mississippi College. The regional victors advance to the nationals- men at Hutchinson, Kan., women at Tyler, Texas - March 15-19. Looking at past region– als, the outcomes ofdivision and state play mean little on who emerges from MC's neutral Wood Coliseum with tickets to the big shows.
