On Wednesday, March 23, the New Stage Therater's Arts-in– Education statewide tour came to Decatur and presented pcrfonnances for Newton County High School and East Central Community College students. The event was jointly spon– sored by NCHS ami ECCC. Similar perfonnanccs were viewed by over 20,000 students in 50 schools throughoutMS last year. Directed by Francine Thomas, education Director at New Stage, the Young Acting Company performed A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare and Mississip– pi Talking, a series of scens from works by Mississippi authors. Mem– bers of the Young Actors are J olivet– tee Anderson, DeAnna Gonzales, John Howell, Reginald Hunter, and Darius Williams. Following both performances, an open discussion was held and stu– dents could pose questions for the actors and discuss the performances. In addition, New Stage sent study guides for review prior to the pcrfor– manc.:es. The performances were aucndcd by students from honors English classes, speech and drama classes, and the Mississippi Writers class.
