Warriors fall to Holmes in season opener, 24-10

Scott hit Tilden Clark for a 59- yard bomb with 1:35 left and the Bulldogs took a 14-3 advan– tage at the half. The Bulldogs made it 17-3 on their first possesion of the third penod, when Henry Ellis recov– ered a Warrior fumble>at the 41. Scott found Dustin Blount for a first down at the 23 before Adams then got five to the 18. Two incomplete passes later, Jeremy Gunalda's 34-yard field goal made it 17-3. After Weems had a 45-yard field goal bounce off the cross– bar, East Central forced Holmes to J>_unt. The Warriors took over on their own 45 and marched down the field. Bobby Breen tossed a 7-yard pass to Frederick Tate for a touchdown with 1:06 left in the third. Weems PAT put ECCC within seven at 17-10. Holmes completed the scor– ing after Kenyon Kent recov– ered a fumble at the Warrior 39. Holmes got to the 17, where it faced a third-ahd-10. Scott completed a pass for a first-and-goal at the 6. Adams carried it the rest of the way with 3:45left to play. ECCC's next game is on the road Sept. 10 at Copiah-Lincoln for a 7 p.m. game.
DECATUR - The East Central Commumty College Warriors opened the football season on a losing note Thursday night, dropping a 24- 10 decision to the Holmes Bulldogs. "Our talent level i' better this year, but I was real impressed with Holme:-' quar– terback," ECCC coach Reese Bridgman said. "'He hurt us when they needed to and took the ball and jammed it down our throats. "We shot ourselve~ in the foot, with first game mistakes and freshman mistake~. a:s we had plenty of chance" to put the ball in the end zone. but didn't." Holmes scored on their first series. The Bulldogs ~tarted at their own 35 yard line Landon Smith 4-vard run with 6:05 left in the first gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, ECCC drove from its own 19 yard line in 14 plays, for a fourth-and– three situation where Peyton Weems kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2:35 left. "We moved the ball but just couldn't get it in," said ECCC's Bridgman. Holmes came right back.
