Cain getting kicks at La. Tech By Emily Gibson The Meridian Star
Settling for second best has never been Jason Cain's philosophy. Cain, an athletic and academic prototype from Newton County has proven to be an outstanding role model. "The key for .my success has been for me to be the best I can be, and not settling for anything less," Cain said. "And my mom and dad have supported me in everything I have done." Cain is currently attend– ing the Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La., on a football scholarship. Although football has proven to be the most rewarding sport for Cain, baseball is his favorite. Cain began playing baseball at the age offive. "That (football) was the one sport I was able to go to college and play," Cain said. "Baseball is what I have always dreamed about ... Baseball is the sport I would have chosen." But an undeniable talent for football was evident to Cain even though punting was a handed down position. "I inherited the job in the lOth grade," Cain said. "No one else wanted to do it and I said that I would." Cain, a punter for East Central Community College for the past two years, aver– aged 43 yards a kick and led the nation throughout most of the 1993 season. He has been named Second Team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association, and was previously chosen First Team Junior College Gridwire All– American. Cain graduated in 1992 from Newton County High
